Animal Defense League has Success in Healing Wound of Paralyzed Dog10/1/99 Attn: Anita Petito, The Hymed Group, 1890 Bucknell Drive, Bethlehem, PA 18015 Dear Ms Petito: We are very pleased to send you this case study attesting to the amazing success we had using hyCURE. Bouncer is a 1.5 year-old male Basenji mix dog who was hit by a car on 1/25/99. A witness found him unconscious and finding no collar or identification, took him to the Animal Defense League in San Antonio, TX. The Animal Defense League is a no kill shelter and in that spirit, they took in this injured stray who had obvious spinal cord injuries. After several weeks of successful medical management, a myelogram was performed. The results revealed fractures of T6, 7,8 and a dislocated fracture of T9. Bouncer demonstrated most of the clinical signs of paraplegia with slight movement of his right hind leg. Unable to stand, his mobility consisted on dragging himself using his front legs. A friend of the Animal Defense League donated monies to purchase Bouncer a wheelchair which he began using in February. Unfortunately, there were fitting problems with the wheelchair and Bouncer developed an inguinal wound 5 cm x 1 cm on the right where the wheelchair exerted pressure during ambulation. This wound extended through the fascia to the muscle sheath and was aggravated by frequent exposure to urine and feces. The wound became infected and a variety of medications were tried without success. Our veterinarian suggested I call you for assistance. You were immediately helpful and enthusiastic about this injured stray. Not only did you offer your assistance, but you put us in touch with Jeffrey Moorman, D.V.M. who has extensive experience with spinal cord injured animals as well as with hyCURE. Together, the two of you assisted us in establishing a plan of care for Bouncer that was enormously successful. After careful daily bathing, we applied hyCURE topically to the inguinal wound. It interacted with the wound exudate and formed a gel which dried to a protective coating. Within four days, a newly formed granulation tissue bed was evident. Because Bouncer was incontinent, wound cleaning and application of hyCURE was done daily. At the tenth day, a healthy bed of granulation tissue had formed. At fifteen days, skin contraction was present and the wound was left uncovered to heal without a bandage. On the twenty first day, the wound was completely healed and the treatment was discontinued. We want to acknowledge the outstanding support all of you provided to the Animal Defense League's effort to rescue this sweet dog. Not only was hyCURE amazingly effective, but your support and advice in this difficult case were much appreciated. Hymed's commitment to animal health is outstanding and we greatly appreciate all you have done for Bouncer. As a follow up, Bouncer is now in foster care awaiting adoption. He is regaining strength in his hind quarters and can stand with assistance. He has regained some bowel and bladder control and he can wag his tail. If he could talk, I know he would thank you for helping to save his life.
